ABOUT KUALA LUMPUR 2017 Torch Run
  • In conjunction with Kuala Lumpur 2017 (KL2017), the Torch Run will traverse the country from the 14th of May 2017 in Johor and end in Kuala Lumpur on the 12th of August 2017.
  • The torchbearers will be selected to represent the diversity that is Malaysia.
  • The Torch Run will travel through selected iconic places across the country, making the run unique as this has never been done before in the history of the SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.
  • All citizens of Malaysia and Southeast Asia residing/studying/working in Malaysia are welcome to participate. No participation fee will be charged.
  • Applicants who are interested to be torch bearers in their respective States may apply through the website.
  • The high point of the run will be when the torch is brought into the Bukit Jalil National Stadium to light up the Games cauldron at the opening ceremony of KL2017 on 19 August 2017. The fire will remain lit until the closing ceremony, when it will then be put out to mark the end of the Games.
  • The Torch Run has been part of the SEA Games and the ASEAN Para Games tradition and is in line with other major global sporting events. The modern-day Torch Run is symbolic, and highlights the inclusiveness of sports and the role it plays in uniting communities.

Objectives
  • To provide an avenue for all Malaysians to be part of the Games, consistent with the theme “Rising Together” which focuses on the spirit of togetherness in the Southeast Asian community.
  • To provide an opportunity for Malaysians to symbolically express support for the athletes and the Games, which aims to be the best yet organized.
  • To promote KL2017 directly to the locals. The Games will commence in August 2017.
  • To fuel the excitement of KL2017 around the country before it commences.
  • To allow Malaysians to view the torch up-close, which is custom-designed for the Games.

OBORGAMI
Mechanism of the Run
  • The run will kick off at the main city or a selected iconic place in each State.
  • The run is casual and not competitive.
  • The run will start from one check point to the next. The average distance between each checkpoint is between 1 – 2 kilometers whilst the average distance between each district ranges from 2 km (closest) to 15 km (farthest).
  • They will be comprised of the torch bearers and members of the general public who will accompany the torch bearers.
  • The torch bearers will lead the run. Torch bearers will take turns to hold the torch for an average distance of 200 meters.
  • There will be several checkpoints within each district.
  • The run will travel across selected districts in each State until it reaches the border of the next State.
  • The torch will then be handed over to the representative of the next host State at the border.

PARTICIPATION RULES
  • Open to citizens of Malaysia and Southeast Asia residing / studying / working in Malaysia, aged 12 and above.
  • Fit and active (physically and emotionally).
  • Able to continuously run up to 2 kilometers.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Submit the application form before the closing date on 21st April 2017.
