Sailing for racing or regatta, means competition of vessel with the same design and technical specifications of each class. The competitors' skills and their success, depends mostly on their boat sailing technique against other competitors and challenging factors such as the current wind, sea condition and weather. Competitors' profiles play a major role on strategy in this sport, for example, where light sailors usually do not perform well in classes that require great strength, like the Laser Standard. Competitors will manoeuvre their boats on a predetermined courses setup with buoys or markers. They will compete in series of preliminary races followed by the final Medal Race to determine the overall champion. At the 29th Sea Games, the competition will take place at Langkawi island in the State of Kedah, an hour flight from Kuala Lumpur. This is a well-known venue for sailing races such as the annual Langkawi International Regatta and renowned ISAF's Youth Sailing World Championship. The 29th Sea Games Sailing Event will comprise 14 events: seven men's, six women's and one mixed. In a sport in which wind and the sea are at their natural state, the winning sailors will show their true and tactical seamanship.
